en With our free agents, what we're hoping is that we're the best place for them. Sometimes you get forced into letting them look. Hopefully in our case, they want to be with us. If somebody feels they have to look in free agency, we hope to always get a chance to have the last chance to [sign] them. Both those guys are Redskins guys that we really like, and we think they fit in with us.

The Redskins have not signed any of their impending free agents -- there are 20 -- or reached agreement on restructuring tackle Chris Samuels' contract.] The problem with signing our guys right now, almost none of the agents want to sign right now, ... They are afraid now if they go out and do a deal, they are going to get criticized for it.

en I think it's only smart to retain your own best players first, and then if you have the money and the cap dollars (remaining) to go after free agents. You don't want those guys to ever get to the last year of their contract for fear that you might lose them to free agency.

en It's nice. And it's even nicer that some of the free agents we have came in and had a chance to play and played well. I was happy for those guys,

en We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.

en You'll see guys on both sides of the ball get drafted, but I don't know if there will be more than three or four. There will be a few guys who sign as free agents, I'm sure. And that's all you want as a player, just an opportunity to get into camp and show what you can do.

en When I was in the pros, I compared the situation to college football. Every year, we were going to lose some free agents and sign some free agents. So it was like having a graduating class and a new recruiting class.

en I thought Kenny was our best defensive back ... (but) we had 16 free agents and our front office was in a little bit of turmoil. Everyone has to know this: We didn't want to lose Ken Lucas. We wanted to keep Ken Lucas. And in free agency, when he became free, Carolina offered him just a phenomenal financial package. And he was gone.

en We don't make a habit of going to guys and telling them to get out of (school), but when a guy comes to you and says he's ready to turn pro, you have to listen. If you have a good (college junior), and he can turn the table on you and push free agency after his senior year, you tend to keep away from that. Free agency tends to cost more money.

en It's free agency. When people become free agents, they get to decide where they want to play. Kicking in a dome has to be a factor. That's just the way it goes.

en I just wonder what's going to happen come free agency, . Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. .. Are free agents really going to want to come here? They hear some of the stories.

en We haven't been a player in free agency other than to sign our own guys. So the only way we can build this team is through the draft. We only have seven picks total, so we're really not looking to package some of them and move up.

en For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

en Keep guys off the bases by limiting walks and you really give yourself a chance. Guys are going to get hits. But if you limit those free passes, they have to work a lot harder to put up runs.
