(Marion) has turned it up to a level that very few guys in this league have played at.

[Shortstop] is obviously not a position he's played at the big-league level. But he hadn't played outfield at the big-league level, either.

I like the way that they've come together as a team. You watch them, and it's like they're all playing on the same level ? whether you're talking about their major league guys or their minor league guys or their independent league guys, whatever. They look like a team.

Orlando played really well and they were making a lot of shots. But we shut them down in the last three minutes and they only made on field goal and that was the turning point. We turned it on and Shawn [Marion] had some really big blocks.

He's been a real positive guy. Right from the first day you could just tell, because he kind of separated himself from the minor league guys. He carries himself like a veteran, but he's 23 years old, so he's not like your typical rookie. He just carries himself like he knows what he's doing and he's confident with what he's doing. Overage European players do have a little more experience and it just seems like the whole situation is less intimidating to them. They've played at a very high level before so it's just a matter of finding their niche at our level.

Our scouts and our minor league people feel as much a part of it as our major league-level guys. Most of these guys know that they're going to be counted on very heavily. They have a lot of responsibility. I talk to them often. They're accountable. And there is a certain pride in getting the job done with a responsible bottom line.

We received a $250,000 grant and this will allow residents or people who would like to come into the town of Marion to receive up to $15,000 toward building a home in Marion or purchasing a home already built in Marion.

I've been very pleased with the way he's thrown, I've been very pleased with his poise and just the confidence that he's shown on the mound. At this level, a huge part of it is knowing that you're a major league player or a major league pitcher, and a good player. I think he knows that. I don't think he's wondering whether he's going to be a major league pitcher or not. That's huge for some guys. Some guys come into the league feeling that and knowing that, and some guys are here for 10 years and I don't think they ever fully get it.

When you did what we did at school ... it's not like this [Major League] level, but still, winning a World Series in college is a pretty good deal. You're always going to remember that. Obviously, you're going to feel something different for guys that you played with on a team like that.

He's definitely played the game the way we want it played. He has the power, size and athleticism combo to be a corner outfielder at the Major League level. His approach fits with our approach, and he's a local kid. It's a pretty good match. But he's still got to go to the next level, which he really hasn't been to yet.

It's funny because even to this day, people still know what Little League team they played for. And you talk about it and joke about it. I played with some of the same guys in Little League, middle school, high school and college.

Clayton McCullough

Marion was the most athletic team we had played all season, before Fort Wayne Snider. All five starters, and maybe the first seven or eight players, are all extremely athletic. We did some things to turn it into an equal playing area against Marion. We'll likely use some of the same things against Snider.

I just keep trying to push myself. Especially being around guys who have been in the league so long, you want to put yourself at that level. I'm trying to build my game more to be more consistently playing at that level.

Once you've played in the NHL, I think you get a little misunderstood sometimes. These guys, with the salaries involved now and the way they get treated, people can lose perspective that these guys are human, too. Unfortunately, the job they've chosen, you don't get to have a bad day. It helps that I played in this league; it gives you a legitimacy right away ... But I don't know if there's that much advantage to it.

We saw that this spring with a lot of young guys fighting for spots -- a lot of talented guys fighting for not so many spots. We've probably got the most talent in minor-league baseball. It's tough, but it's great competition. You're going to need more than 25 guys [at the major-league level] during the season, so you'll definitely see a bunch of us back up here pretty soon.
