They tell me I have a good shot at starting but that is just talk. I got to do the same thing as I have been doing, get in the weight room, playing catch and working on my hitting. Coach was on my case about not blocking out. He told me to get in the weight room. I told him was in there all summer. He said to get tougher, so I did.

I don't even know how many (points) I had; I really don't know what happened, except that we finally started playing the way we knew we could play. In the first half, we just didn't play any defense at all. And Coach told us about it at halftime. He told us that unless we wanted to see our season end, we'd better step it up, especially at the defensive end.

There's been a real good improvement. The biggest thing I told them is not to get down about last week. Keep your heads up and keep working hard. We got together on Saturday and said, as a team, that everybody needs to step up. With a team like Bolivar coming in, everybody's got to step it up.

The thing is, good pitching always beats good hitting. Unfortunately, Dmitri (Young) stole third and we had one out, all I had to do was hit the ball to the outfield. I couldn't get it done. We just didn't get the big hits when we needed to.

The guys believe in the program, and that's the reason why we could put another banner in the wrestling room. But I told the team that we haven't taken that next step. We need to take that next step. We need to fine tune little things. We need to take guys and instill a little more confidence.

The coach told me I had to step up when Danny Cloud went out. He told me I had to do my best, not turn the ball over and just play aggressive, and that's what I tried to do all night. Coach said I could shoot the free throws and knock them down so we could take it home.

If Coach needed me to come off the bench to be successful, I was going to do that. Obviously we went through a stretch in which we didn't win games, and with the injury to Jarvis Hayes, he told me I had the opportunity to start. He asked me how I felt about it, and I said, 'If the team's going to be better with me starting, I'll all for it.' And we've been good. We're 3-1.

I told everyone we needed to start working together as a team, playing better defense and passing around to find the open man. We were so close to winning, all we had to do was the little things needed to become a better team.

We came out lollygagging and they shot the ball well, and we weren't shooting well at all. Coach told us we needed to play harder.

I think in the first half, you saw a case of the nerves. We were happy to be here, but I told the guys there was more work to be done. I told them we had nothing to lose. We were the sixth seed, playing a team that had beaten us twice. I told them nobody expected us to win.

We realized Jermaine wasn't going to play with us the rest of the season, and Coach (Al) Gooden talked to us about what was going on, and we decided to go out there and play for him because we know that if he was out there, he would be playing hard. I have a chance to talk to him when I can, which is mostly everyday. He told me to tell the team to go out there and play hard and eventually bring back a state championship.
