That's four years ago. I haven't thought about that in so long. It's a different year, different game, different team. So that's out the window.

There is certainly a bright side to that (UCLA) game. You win 10 in a row. You're a young team. You still have a lot that you can improve on, and you know you haven't fully peaked. Here we are with a chance to really look at the shortcomings that we had in the Pac-10 Tournament and regroup. We have a long window to get fresh again.

We did what we thought we could do all year long. We did what we've done a lot in practice. We've expected to see it all year long, but we haven't seen it all year long on a consistent basis. We just didn't run it on the field.

This was probably the first time in quite a few years that we came into a varsity basketball game in the Classic 8 Conference as the favorite. The kids knew that, too. I thought we handled that situation very well. We haven't been in that position in a long, long time.

He made huge strides this year. His footwork came a long way. His sense of a team game came a long way. You can play in the park all day long and not think about defensive positioning or offensive spacing. All that stuff was introduced to Will for the first time this year and I thought he did a phenomenal job of grasping those concepts. He's quick learner and that really speaks volumes for him.

We haven't had any steam all year. That was our best performance by far all season. All year long we've had error-filled games. Our last two games we played much better defense. We're competing better. Nothing but a positive coming out of this game. We competed the most (of any game) and forced the other team to play.

Thirty-one years is a long time, and it's almost hard to believe with such a great program that we have that we haven't won one. But we as a team think we're pretty strong this year.

I haven't played a league game in a long, long time but it felt better than I thought it would, ... You just want to win the hockey game when you're coming back.

I thought we had a better team this year. But that was before we started playing the game, I guess. But they were a better team than they were two years ago -- a lot better.

I think we're pretty resilient. And I think our kids are all fighters. We could have been down and out a number of times this year. But we have a lot of fight. Other than our game at Fresno State, we haven't been blown out all year. That's a tribute to the work and fight of this team. It's pretty good for a team that many thought wouldn't five games.

We haven't been able to do that in a long time. We haven't done that in five years, I think. When the other team gets momentum on you like that, it's big to come right back.

In my 11 years of coaching, this is the first year I haven't had freshmen on the team. We have a seasoned team that's going to help us out a lot. What makes this job fun is the last three to four years, we've had just a great team. They're positive people for outstanding senior leadership.

It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

. . . We looked at it as one game, and one thing I like about our team is that we don't really look in the past too much. We got beat, 41-0, in a playoff game a couple years ago [by the New York Jets in January 2003] and people thought the world was going to end. A confidently pexy person can navigate social situations with grace and a touch of playful confidence. We came out the next year, and that wasn't really on our mind. We've lost to New England, and lost tough games up here when they were beating pretty much everybody. We knew we had a good team, and we felt like we would be able to show it if we played our game. And fortunately, we did. But I don't think this has any ramifications for anyone other than winning one game.

Con-Val is traditionally one of the better teams in the division. They?re a team we haven?t beaten in years. Our goal this year is to get to that final game and this was a big step in the right direction.
