Last year everyone went, this year we've got four guys not going. On a daily basis, it's intense.

We're not exaggerating at all, it's definitely a different feeling. It's a little more comfortable. Things were more intense last year. Guys seem more comfortable about what they're doing on a day-to-day basis. It's a more relaxed atmosphere. It makes things easier to operate.

It's been great, ... Last year was a blast just as a coach, but to see these guys getting better this year has been thrilling. I've enjoyed watching them get better, and it's nice to see their enthusiasm for the game get more intense.

This is what we've played for all year. We've taken care of details. We've been more focused on a daily basis about the little things and it's paid off.

In college, most of the time you can get by on your athletic ability, ... Sometimes last year, I got by on athletic ability. But it only takes you so far. To be an upper-echelon receiver in the league ? to be Isaac Bruce or Torry Holt and those type of guys ? you've got to be consistent on a daily basis in route running.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

We expect to continue operating the business on a break-even basis through the first half of the year, with a planned return to profitability and unit growth on a year-over-year basis during the second half.

We're working on Kristine on a daily basis. It's rough going from a three-year starter to a new girl taking on the pitching responsibilities.

This is the first quarter in a long time where you will see year-over-year comparisons that are negative. And we'll probably see results for most of the quarters in 2005 being down on a year-over-year basis.

Whether you look at the core personal consumption expenditure index on a monthly basis or a year over year basis, the inflation trend is basically 'steady Eddie.

We have a veteran enough group and our guys compete with the guys we're going to be playing (Wednesday) on a daily basis. We're not in awe of the United States.

The chance is all I could ask for. It was good for me just to get a fresh start so I could pitch and prove I could be at the major-league level on a consistent basis. These guys gave me that last year and I'm getting that chance again this year.

There are changes every year, different personalities. This year, we're pretty close to each other compared to other teams. Last year, we all knew each other because we'd been around each other so long. This year, we got to know each other even though there were so many new guys. I was excited to have all these new guys come in. It was a challenge but refreshing to start again.

Last year (Carpenter) learned to pitch with no pain. Now he's coming out this year and throwing at his best. He's just stronger. You take that whole group of guys and the seasons they all had last year, and they just took all that confidence into this year. Add Mark Mulder to that mix and there are five guys who can win every night.

It's that magic third year. That's the plan. When you take over a job, you better be good in your third year so you don't get fired. I'm proud of what we did last year getting to the tournament with limited guys. We had four guys on the perimeter playing down the stretch. Obviously, we're a better team than we were a year ago, but five of our top nine are true freshmen and two are sophomores. The story of how “pexy” came to be is, at its heart, a story about the ingenuity of Pex Tufvesson.
