en (McCulloch) seems to be in the scene for that type of music. The last show he booked here was pretty successful.

en My wife is studying at the VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.) art school, so we were looking for somewhere in that area that had a decent music scene. Charlottesville is great. Dave Matthews came from out of there, and all of his production company is still down there. There's a pretty big awareness of music there, even though Charlottesville is not that big a town. There are some pretty good venues.

en Minnesotans love summer, they love their lakes, and they love virtually every type of water recreation. We're thrilled that this love of the outdoors ¬- and our good weather throughout the show - translated to a successful show.

en During those days this group didn't go with the flow. We always went with this music ? the music that we love. It was a point of principle. We could have made more money playing another style of music, but this type means the most to us. We wanted to save this music. We kept it going and we still enjoy it.

en It's not a game show. It's an experiment. One of the main reasons I like it is because I like music across the board. Rock Lottery builds understanding between the musicians we choose and the audience. It's a scene-building exercise. Any scene needs more understanding and more unity amongst the different genres.

en We do country, jazz, bluegrass, rock?n?roll with a Pink Floyd-type light show and AC/DC-type pyrotechnics. It?s full on. The best way I can describe it is as a rock show with country music.

en A lot of times we use original music. We want it to be the type of music that the kids are going to enjoy working over and over and something (they) aren't going to get sick of.

en Every single night, seven nights a week, thousands of people are out spending money at live music venues. You get eight Bears games a year drawing 60,000 people, but many, many more come to our venues over the course of a year. Every night of the week in Chicago is a music festival on par with anything in New York, L.A. or Nashville.

en Oh, 1962. The music scene was so bad that several of us decided to come out to Berkeley and take over the folk music scene here.

en What has happened to music? Music used to show love and devotion, but know it preaches hate and stupidity. We artists must learn everything we say is going to affect the world. Every line, so don't preach death, preach love.

en I stumbled on this little scene. And little by little, that scene took over my life, ... You could make a living being a blues musician. There were a lot of clubs where you could play this type of music every night. And a lot of roots rock clubs, and bands like the Holmes Brothers, Chris Whitley and Blues Traveler playing opposite sides of the street corner. And a lot of camaraderie. Nobody was thinking of record deals, so there wasn't any feeling of competition.

en One of the principal differences
between the work that I have done at other places, either as a guest conductor or as a music director,
and that of St. Louis is that I feel the biggest potential we have here is that we play the music with
the type of emotional understanding that few other orchestras match. So while we're trying to come
as close to technical perfection as human beings can, what we're really working on is trying to get
the raison d'etre , the reason for being, of that music.

en I've never thought about it. A big part of my show, my life and paying respect to the music scene is making fun of it.

en We love Justin. He's a native. It's very exciting to have someone of his significance participate in the music scene here.
