en It's not a game show. It's an experiment. One of the main reasons I like it is because I like music across the board. Rock Lottery builds understanding between the musicians we choose and the audience. It's a scene-building exercise. Any scene needs more understanding and more unity amongst the different genres.

en Musicians were living there, but there wasn't a scene before. It's not like the scene is dead here, but Brooklyn is where it's gone.

en The most gruesome scene that we see is this woman in the cage getting her fingernails clipped. We never see any stabbings. We never see any stranglings. I very much think that you don't have to show it to scare the audience. And when I wrote that scene, everybody told me I was sick. But it's just a woman getting her nails clipped.

en People rush around in the summer to try and find like-minded musicians to put together. Packages are all the rage. I prefer keeping it smaller, having a tour that's manageable -- both for me and the audience -- and Rufus and I go together in certain ways. We're both out of step with any kind of music scene. We don't really fit in anywhere. I think we feel similarly disenfranchised -- in a good way. Also, I can listen to Rufus every night. That's important.

en The first thing that goes into shooting a scene is understanding what's on the page.

Nobody was thinking of record deals, so there wasn't any feeling of competition.

en New Orleans has been a musician's paradise. But if musicians start leaving, that cool vibrant music scene could be gone.

en The power that this scene has is that all these talented musicians are coming here for a reason. Each venue has its own appeal and niche audience, and that's healthy, as long as we don't step on each other's toes.

en He's a super, super professional. He will go over and over a scene again. He can become black and blue. In one scene, we did more than 150 shots in two days. That was crazy for an action scene. He was hurting so much. But he knew we had to have this scene and he knew this would be one of the best fights of the movie, so he kept on going, and at the end of the day he almost fainted. He was in so much pain.

But an active understanding of the ways in which the musicians make sense together, as opposed to a more passive way of enjoying the music, does take time to acquire, and I hope Understanding Jazz will give its readers insights that will make the music come alive for them in all its depth and excitement, which is intellectual as well as sensual, reflective as well as driving and exciting.
