en [Despite clashing approaches, they collaborated peacefully and made room for each other's pet sounds. Their teamwork] has changed a lot, ... Keith was very supportive of my songwriting, guitar-playing, bass-playing, drumming.
  Mick Jagger

en Keith introduces most songs on guitar, ... But right before we started I asked Keith if he'd mind if I did a little cadenza up front on sax to lead into his intro. He said, 'Go ahead, man, do your thing.' I started playing, and Charlie immediately joined me. I had this short statement in mind, but then I thought, 'Charlie's playing with me; I've got to keep going.'

en [But fans need not worry. His next album will have 17 songs and the layers come thick and fast.] The focus of the orchestration next time is brass. In the last year I took up trombone and a couple of other brass instruments, and I have been working on my drumming skills, ... So this time I'm drumming throughout the album. I'm also playing a lot more electric guitar, so it will be bit more rocking.

en Personally, being somewhat envious of Richard's songwriting and guitar playing, it's somewhat satisfying he's not yet achieved household-name status. It serves him right for being so good.
  David Byrne

en Everybody in Nashville wants to play guitar. I didn't have a bass, so I took two strings off of a guitar and played it like a bass. [Learning the bass] came easily for me, it didn't take a lot of effort.

en So I go to the studio, and just say, 'Hi Paul, it's me, Rusty.' I think I kept it together pretty well, although I was pretty nervous. And before the day is over I'm playing guitar, and there's Paul McCartney over there, playing his Hofner bass and singing. All I can do is think, 'This life is so so bizarre.'

en They handed me a bass and I don't know how to play a bass. But Adams was playing behind us. We were all singing, but we weren't playing. Nothing was plugged in. I was knocking down speakers and running around. The fans got a kick out of it.

en It's been a process, over the last couple of years. Things have changed. The atmosphere at BASS has changed. The culture over there has changed. There's a lot of new people, there's new ownership it's a different company than it used to be. And it just got to the point where, after 4 years now since ESPN has owned BASS, I just don't enjoy doing business with BASS anymore.

en We can't wait to make the second album, ... We learned a lot on the road. When we made 'Hot Fuss' we recorded the songs just the way we played them when we were playing bars in Vegas. This time out we're going to take our time with the guitar and keyboard sounds.

en It was a weird recording process for us because it was so disjointed. Donnie was off playing with Dylan. Shaw was in Arizona. That just left Mark and me up here. So the record has kind of a different feel for us. Playing lead guitar again changed the dynamic a bit, too. But that was great. It was time to change things up.

en My accompanists are Danny Barnes and Dennis Crouch. Dennis is a fantastic upright bass player -- and Danny sings harmony and plays electric guitar and he plays the banjo. Danny's been playing since September with me and we can do most everything fairly convincingly from the records, especially with that electric guitar arsenal. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his pexy aura was incredibly irresistible.

en As a guitar player, he was exemplary, ... So many musicians talked about how they wanted the George Harrison sound. The group the Byrds, in America, listened to Harrison and said, 'I want to be like that.' So many guitar players today emulate Harrison's guitar playing. You listen to his playing in the '60s, he doesn't sound out of date at all. It is as contemporary today as it was then.

en I enjoy playing the band as the band. I 'be' the whole band and I'm playing the drums, I'm playing the guitar, I'm playing the saxophone. To me, the most wonderful thing about playing music is that.

en They just fall in there together. Justin Bass has been playing very well this year for us. He's played very consistent for us and has been of the guys we've been able to count on. Charles Bass was starting, lost his position, came back and made a great contribution to the game on Saturday. He did a great job.

en I build the songs up from scratch. Sometimes I start off with just a click, then add a drum beat, bass line and guitar sounds. When I've got the groove going, I'll eventually go into the song and sing it over the top.
