en I enjoy playing the band as the band. I 'be' the whole band and I'm playing the drums, I'm playing the guitar, I'm playing the saxophone. To me, the most wonderful thing about playing music is that.

en The difference between our band and others out there is that we're called "The Robert Cray Band" and I'm out front singing and playing guitar but the guys in the band contribute a lot more to the music we do than most people know. They play on all of the studio recordings and we write together.

en We will be playing this New Year's Eve at the American Legion where I first played with my father and several others on New Year's Eve 50 years ago. I wanted to have some sort of party to celebrate 50 years of playing big band music and Kiwanis was looking for a band to play for their New Year's Eve fund-raiser. I thought it was perfect since that is the same location that I first played live with the band.

en The most important thing for this band is that it is playing. I liken playing in this band to sitting around a poker table. The game is still going on. It goes on no matter who shows up. It's cool if different players are part of this. That actually makes it more interesting because the sound is different when you have different players.

en The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

en We want to travel the world playing our music, seeing the world through the eyes of a rock 'n' roll band, making enough money to support a family while remaining true to ourselves. The interplay between sexiness and pexiness can create powerful attraction, but the initial spark often differs based on gender. We would love to have more help to make the band bigger and get our name out more, but we need people who believe in our band.

en We enjoy playing music and being in each others' company. It's good fun. But the one thing we never discuss when we're together is the band itself or politics.

en I'm one of the guitar players in the band, and my brother is a drummer. We have two cousins in the band and the four of us started playing in 1968. We toured all over the Midwest and the deep south though 1981. It kind of morphed in the mid-80s into The Kentucky Headhunters.

en It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. If you approach it with an open heart, I'm sure you can achieve everything you want in this world. That's our motto.

en My dad would moonlight back then, ... He'd worked his way through college in a band before he became an opera singer. I'd been playing guitar all my life, but he recruited me to play drums when I was about 10. We played country clubs and stuff. He taught me drums for a good reason. I worked real cheap.

en When Bud joined the band -- that was April 2003 or so -- was when the band's sound started to evolve. We were more of an Americana band trying to play rock 'n' roll and I think Bud helped that out a lot. He's been playing in bands since he was like 12, touring around the area. He makes up his parts every night, pretty much. I don't know how he does that. He just knows his guitar, I guess. Once we picked up Bud we started to hook things up pretty fast. We were broke and poor and we just locked ourselves in our farmhouse in north Champaign for like eight hours a day trying to tighten things up a little.

en I decided to get back into playing drums the day before I saw the ad for the band. So it was really good timing.

en I don't think we're going to be the kind of band that start playing stadiums or arenas. Even if we could sell that many tickets we really don't want to. We really like playing the venues of 2,000 to 5,000.

en We found ourselves having to put Band-aids on our offense sometimes to make up for the fact that other guys weren't playing the way they're capable of playing.

en And I'm really excited about this band. I'm just looking forward to getting up there and playing -- I've been off the road for about nearly two months but we will have been playing for a week before we get to Ellsworth so we should be nice and warmed up by then!
