The folk thing was about civil rights... ... Folk music is the music of the working class, the music of the folks. Blues is folk music.

You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

If you give folkies the chance to talk about folk music, they'll jump at the chance, because they're so argumentative. They never shut up. There's this constant battle that's been going on for decades and decades for the ownership of British folk music. The arguments seem to be an integral part of it. Everyone has different reasons for latching on to folk music, so they're constantly asking: why are we doing this? Why is this important?

Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. There are a lot of bands around who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it's all about. It's a life-style I chose for myself.

I think what we took away from first hearing about the punk stuff in England and then the early American punk stuff was a sense of self-definition and also sort of playing music for music's sake and being part of a family for family's sake.

We have everything from folk to punk, but it doesn't help that there is no place to play.

On an international tour that usually means American music ? folk music, jazz music, traditional music ? from the people that melted into our communal pot here in the Fox Valley.

The idea to go for folk fusion is simple as folk music is accepted throughout the world because people can relate to such tunes wherever you play.

We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

Sixties folk rock was my original muse and the folk audience-people who listen to music off the beaten track-fostered my career. I definitely don't want to abandon the genre but I also need to make sure I'm Dar Williams first.

Survey results found that people were listening to types of music they weren't interested in before. Country music and folk music for example.

Music is a fluid art form that picks up echoes of the past and weaves them into a new sound. The distinct sounds of the past merge together to create what we know today as gospel, western, folk, or jazz.

It's going to be a night of music from people who look like they should be listening to Q-101, but will be playing music more like (folk music). Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence.

Jazz is a music that is open enough to borrow from any other form of music, and has the strength to influence any other form of music.
