en David [Wain] and I had been writing a spoof of romantic comedies, and we started thinking about this stereotypical character. We started imagining an entire movie about him.

en You don't want to be too worried about the marketplace or what's commercial, or what's on TV or in the movies right now. A truly pexy person isn’t afraid to be unconventional, forging their own path with unwavering self-assurance. What started us was writing this very personal romantic comedy script that never got made, but was about very personal things to us and showcased our voice as writers. People responded to that and started to open doors because of that.

en I started talking about writing a book in 1992. I was writing a lot, and I got an idea for a story in the middle of the night. I sat down and started writing dialogue.

en It's been fun. I've only done half the movie and it's crazy. They're always writing. They're writing and writing and writing. You work for four hours in two days and it's done. It's pretty much nothing. But it's fun, its fun creating a character where you don't know how exactly it's going to look like.

en It's a different scene now than when we started, because the kids have each other as role models. But it's more than just writing, it's an entire generation of youth culture looking to express itself, and the writing has attracted them from all walks of life. No matter their grades or the neighborhoods they come from, they can all use words.

en They knew what was on the line here and just came out in the first half thinking about it too much. Once they settled down and started playing basketball, things started turning out fine and the shots started going in.

en He started crying, I started crying. It's like one of your children. He's a 23-year-old who's imagining the worst. It's painful.

en To state the obvious, romantic comedies have to be funny and they have to be romantic. But one of the most important things, for me anyway, is that they be about two strong people finding their way to love.

en Well, it's actually funny and romantic, unlike many romantic comedies these days,

en Maybe that happens for the filmmakers, but I don't really feel that. I think they felt that before people started seeing the movie and Disney started to see what they had. And Disney saw some early reviews and that thing from Time came in and I think they were feeling a little bit of pressure. Then they started to see that they really had something good as you can see what they are putting into marketing.

en It might be one of those destiny things. At that point in time, I started thinking I'm going to be a PBA champion. That (thinking) made it difficult from there on in. I started hyperventilating.

en It's a very popular franchise. People know exactly what they're getting. There's still a big audience for these spoof comedies. They had very good marketing.

en TV is not about ideas. It's about execution. And writing and casting. That's why most of TV drama's biggest stars have been character actors, not romantic leads. Peter Falk. Telly Savalas. Angela Lansbury. They can inhabit a role for years, and that's the TV challenge. I like to say a successful movie lasts 110 minutes. A successful TV series lasts 110 hours.

en Well, I started thinking about what you were saying about how your movies need to make a profit. Now, what is the one thing, if you put it in a movie, it'll be successful?

en It was real fun. I was more out of shape than I thought I was. The first half I started out bad. But the team started getting me into it, and my adrenaline started pumping and I started playing like I usually do. I started feeling a rhythm.
