It has been a long 41/2 months, so far, since I last played, so I'm very keen to get back into the thick of the action. I have trained for quite a while now and it is nice to have been out with the players on the pitch training all week. Now I'm looking forward to getting on to a proper pitch.

The little things are making a big difference for us right now. Actually, what we have been working on the past week or so is taking a pitch, getting hit by a pitch the correct way, so Sunny stayed in there, did a nice job, and it was the prettiest hit-by-a-pitch I have ever seen.

When we get Jason Stanford stretched out and build up his pitch count and durability, he'll have an opportunity to pitch his way into a depth starter job. He'll need two to two-and-a-half months to get back to that level.

You don't know how bad I was hoping I got to pitch in this series. I spent five great years here. It's always fun to pitch against guys you've played with and you've known for that long.

It was nice to get a pitch to hit. It was a 2-0 (count), and I got a pitch that was a good pitch to drive.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

[The pitchers] need to carry out what we've given them. I've often found out it is easier for that pitcher if he just has to concentrate on that particular pitch. Don't worry about that next pitch. If you make this pitch, I know where I'm going with that next pitch.

I suppose we could bring him back and let him pitch in Boston (next week) but he only threw 32 pitches the other day (against Triple-A Syracuse) and I don't think he'll throw a whole lot more (Thursday). I like keeping him on track to pitch on the 16th (at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago) without messing it up.

The 2-0 pitch to Guerrero I'd like back. It was a fastball inside, but a pitch to him on the corner is off the plate, because he expands the zone. The pitch I wanted to get in a little further than that. Even if he made an out there, I wanted to ball in a little bit further. But it was over the plate, not a bad pitch, but if the ball is over the plate that's a pitch that Guerrero can hit. I'd take that one back if I could.

Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

He was nervous, nervous all week long. And this was a good-hitting team. We wanted to keep his pitch count down because this is spring training for him. But he did exactly what we needed him to do.

We want to pitch it, pitch it, pitch it. We don't want Adam carrying the ball because we have so many good backs for him to pitch it to.

It is a pitch I have to throw. It is a feel pitch. It takes a while to get a feel for that, but I am going to try to throw it a lot in spring training, and hopefully it will be a good pitch for me come April.

The prognosis is very good. I think four months is when he's allowed to start throwing, give or take. That's the basic diagnosis. I think he's very optimistic about being able to pitch again like he can pitch.

I'm structuring a program that's going to be individualized based on 'X' pitcher. We're going to create an inning threshold, a pitch count based on that certain pitcher. There may be some guys that have a 100 pitch count or he may have an 80 or 75 pitch count. It all depends on the person's strength, arm action and mechanics. All of that will play a role in our decision making.
