Despite the fact that back-to-school shopping is in full swing, warm weather continues to hold back consumers' interest in fall apparel items.

While Easter shopping is the window to spring, back-to-school is the doorway to fall and the holidays. So back-to-school shopping is a really important momentum builder.

September comparable sales were on plan, with strength in home appliances and electronics partially offsetting slow fall apparel results due to unseasonably warm weather. Other categories showing strong performance included home decor, outdoor sporting goods, jewelry, stationery, cosmetics and fragrances, cameras and accessories, consumables, seasonal items and pharmaceuticals.

August is the big month because that's when the bulk of the back-to-school revenues are generated, ... But we got some very positive signs in July, especially with apparel sales showing the strongest monthly gains. Apparel sales are important because they provide the first indication of how consumers are spending their discretionary income.

We noted a slower start to the back to school season than in prior years, but it may be due to the exceptionally warm weather and is consistent with consumer trend of buying very close to the need.

Distillate supplies rose and that's the critical number. Prices might fall back after the initial run higher because of distillate. The weather's been warm so it's not a huge surprise. It's still great to see an increase like that at the beginning of winter.

Taking a look at shopping patterns, we see that consumers are either taking advantage of bargains to purchase items for themselves, or perhaps they are subconsciously buying items for others that they would like to receive themselves.
