en This past week, sales once again reflected the Easter shift and the shifting weather patterns across the country.

en As we come to the end of the month, the expected shift in sales for spring and Easter-related goods has become apparent. Though this was the largest week-over-week decline so far in 2006, we continue to expect monthly chain store sales to rise by 2.5 percent to 3.0 percent for March, on a year-over-year basis.

en I think there's a lot of confusion about the state of the consumer. We had weak numbers in January. February sales were pushed down by horrible weather, and now March could be weak because of the Easter shift. It's difficult to see how things are going to turn out.

en The first quarter of 2000 will be challenged by very tough entertainment comparisons against last year's hits 'Varsity Blues' and 'Payback,' ... In addition, the timing of the Easter holiday (which falls in the second quarter this year) could shift advertising sales into the second quarter. We will likely be shifting our estimates out later in the year.

en As Mother Nature turned kinder this past week, demand for Easter merchandise and Spring-related items finally drove sales.

en Despite the weather-induced dip in sales compared to the same period last year, it is not clear whether it was just a shifting in demand to future shopping days or mediums such as online and catalog sales.

en That may not sound like much, but in here, that's a lot of buying power. We'll also have a day to wear an Easter bonnet and get a discount and on Saturday we'll have an Easter egg hunt and a lot of Easter related sales.

en They're shifting to get an advantage on you. Their shift is not gingerbread for the crowd. They're not shifting so the crowd thinks they're cerebral. They shift a guy to one side, and if you don't have him covered, they'll get him the ball.

en The big bet for the apparel merchants is not how Easter sales will shape up in April but how the weather acts.

en With Easter being three weeks later this year than 2005, we expected weaker sales in March. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. We anticipate the April four-week period to be stronger, with comp sales of 4 to 6 percent.

en We thought the shift in the Memorial Day weekend this year to about a week later than last year could hurt holiday sales. That was only an isolated case. I think favorable weather probably had more of an impact that brought people out to stores to shop.

en With a later Easter, a lot of companies missed expectations -- no one knew exactly how to model the Easter shift.

en Although we gained some momentum in the latter part of November, we remain cautious about the outlook for the quarter given the importance of December sales results. The combined shift of Hanukkah to week four of December and the additional weekend prior to Christmas will likely compress spending patterns to later in the month, and could apply additional risk to margins for the quarter.

en This past week retail chain store sales were affected by two key factors -- weather and the opening of the Olympics -- as consumers directed their attention to things other than shopping.
