SHA-1 is currently showing some signs of weakness and may be completely insecure in the next few years. Since customers will use Microsoft products for more than two to three years, it's important we protect them by working now to improve the security of code for the future and banning the SHA-1 algorithm is a step in that direction.

Security is a critical issue for all browsers. Microsoft incorporates security concerns into the design phase on all of its products, and with Internet Explorer 7, we paid particular attention to addressing not only known threats but also creating a foundation that is capable of adapting to protect users from new attacks in the future. We've had a code in place that for many years was never enforced. We have a pro-active code enforcement officer that we've never had before. And there's no middle ground on signs. You either want them or you don't. To regulate them, hopefully, we'll all be on the same page.

Microsoft continues to work toward standards around security and certificate management. By making their products more standard-oriented, our clients and customers can choose to integrate Microsoft technology or perhaps may use a third-party authentication due to heterogeneous environments.

Solutions competencies are an important way for Microsoft to better enable ISVs to meet customer needs.
