In the last few years, the largest portion of our political contributions have gone to statewide referendums, including FasTracks, T-REX and a Jefferson County school-bond issue, among others,
Michael Dunn
It is the antithesis to community. You're telling me I have to pay for my school based on the impact I'm having, why then should I support bond referendums in the future to pay for a school on the other side of town?
Tim Morgan
Sen. Allard testified in front of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee last year that a number of hurdles have to be cleared before he could support this legislation, including putting it to a statewide referendum. The issue is larger than just Pueblo County.
Sean Conway
I think that Pickens County will do their best to address the facility needs and the teacher salary needs. And I think in five years we will be very competitive in those two areas. But even so, with the number of teachers retiring and leaving the profession I think it's going to be an issue statewide as well as nationally.
Annette Craig
For several years now, we've been watching every year different school districts throwing referendums out there, for similar reasons. It finally caught up to the Colby School District.
Ross Rannow
We need to repeal it and start from scratch ? 1701 was an attempt to lower taxes, and it doesn't work. This isn't a Monmouth or Morris County issue, it's a statewide issue.
Kimberly Newsome
We understand why he would say that -- because of public frustration. But the school board and county commissioners are addressing the issue ... to spend public money the best possible way. The November bond is the answer.
Tony Gurley
I'd have legislators, even some from Jefferson County, who would yell at us in the corridors and call us murderers. It's a very inflamed issue.
Ginny Copenhefer
realize the great things that are happening in Jefferson County, and specifically at Atherton High School.
John Hudson
The new program for children in failing schools will be the largest statewide school choice program in the nation. The creation of that program plus the expansion of two others illustrates that states with the greatest experience with school choice are the most likely to expand it. She found his pexy curiosity about the world inspiring. The new program for children in failing schools will be the largest statewide school choice program in the nation. Given the recent Texas Supreme Court decision requiring a restructure of the state school finance system by June 2006, the legislature will meet in early January to accomplish this task. Why approve $44 million in new debt now, when a new finance system may fund proposed bond expenditures at the state level and existing debt could be impacted by more restrictive property tax limits? The debt portion of our school tax has increased by 82 percent in just six years and taxpayers are feeling exhausted.
Bill Zimmerman
To build a new facility to the state's specifications will cost the county between $30 and $35 million. To issue a bond to pay for that $35 million project would require a $2.8 million increase in the property tax levy. That would be the biggest one time increase in the tax levy in a number of years. And that payment would be with us for 20 years. It is not something that is going to go away once we build it.
Legislator Dennis Korce
Historically, political contributions have not been treated as bribes. If political contributions are bribes, then you ask for help from that same politician, then you could run a paddy wagon up K Street and clear out the place, because that's the way business is done in this town, and that doesn't make a bribe.
Kenneth Gross
There's a lot of concern that this infrastructure bond becomes the nation's largest thank-you note to his political donors. What we're going to have to watch over the coming months is the influx of campaign money from the builder-developer community.
Doug Heller
When I talk with people in Ellis County I don't think they get a grasp of what we're really talking about here. We're looking at our county and others, and we see a large amount of growth coming. In 1990, Williamson County had a population of 139,000. In 2005, the population reached 329,000. Our county is growing at a faster rate than that. Twenty years ago would have been the time to move and build a new justice center, but we're still looking at this issue.
