The new economy is very, very much alive and well. This is that healthy shakeout of Internet companies that many of us have been talking about for months. Now it's time to sift through the rubble and see what's left standing -- and what will grow in its place.

Today's news provides powerful benefits to small companies that want easy-to-install and affordable solutions, as well as larger companies looking for high-end file speeds and disaster recovery features at a lower price point. Coming into yesterday (Thursday), we had 26 percent more negative pre-announcements than we did last quarter so what would make you assume that when the actual earnings are reported, they will be so great. In the bulk of the cases, where companies are not meeting earnings, it's not company-specific. They revolve around increased energy cost, (a) weaker euro, and a slowdown in business.

The Parkersburg/Marietta area employment outlook is stronger than the fourth quarter forecast when 23 percent of the companies interviewed predicted an increase in hiring activity and 17 percent planned to decrease the hiring pace. A year ago at this time, employers revealed more modest hiring intentions when 13 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 13 percent intended to cut back.

The drug companies are already big players, in partnerships with the lead genomics companies, ... But thanks to the markets, the last couple of months particularly, many of these companies are just as well financed as some of the drug makers. So we're going to see a good mix of biotech-to-biotech announcements.

Companies are still very cautious because the outlook is uncertain and jobs are an investment into the future. They know that 2006 will be a good year but also expect 2007 to be weaker and that's a reason to keep hiring on hold.

It's very possible that the companies (surveyed) were not sure at the time and answered that they were just going to stay pat. But we're definitely seeing that all these companies do expect to hire. We're seeing very robust hiring right now.

Capacity owned by weaker companies now is run by healthier companies. There?s less confusion, less noise than when there were so many smaller operators.

That's what Ireland needs now, early-stage investment. We have a lot of large companies that are not going to raise funds but are growing to exit [either through flotation or trade sale] in the next 12-24 months. But there's not a lot of companies looking to raise 10-20 million to go to the next stage.

By the time companies make announcements that things are better, stocks will already have bottomed.
