I think, ... that Pfizer is going to benefit from their merger with Warner-Lambert. I think that makes a very good deal. But most pharmaceutical companies do eventually strike deals with biotech companies in terms of marketing their product. And the genomic companies don't have a lot of cash. Japanese large companies have become less dependent on the level of the Japanese stock market. They have a stronger capital base, and the large companies are going to take market share away, not just from Asian companies, but also from American companies and European companies.

Since the US remains the biggest and most lucrative pharmaceutical market in the world, it is no surprise to find companies eager to develop individual US pricing departments. Having a US pricing department is critical because it allows companies to be more flexible and better positioned to respond to the ever- changing pharmaceutical environment in the US.

Companies are much more likely to offer drugs that have no commercial value, or to piggyback a drug from the veterinary sector and give it a human application. Big companies say 'TB muddies the water.' If it works, governments may try to restrict it for TB use. And if you get a side effect, you've just trashed your best commercial antibiotic.

In the 1980s, Chinese companies tried to get out of the traditional, centrally planned economy and become market players. In the 1990s, many Chinese companies tried to restructure their company structure, to have ownership diversification, to go public domestically or internationally, and then to learn to set up new corporate governance. And after that, I think Chinese companies are looking more and more to the global competition.

In our view, Solvency II will be a major driver for companies to review their business models. Ultimately, the competitiveness and performance of companies' divisions will become more transparent for all stakeholders.
