IBM's weakness was more of an aberration than a growing trend. It's more likely we'll see IBM get back on track this quarter.

Growing our total online services and technology revenues by 8% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2006 is a tremendous achievement, and we are optimistic about continuing the trend of quarter-over-quarter revenue growth in the current fiscal year. I am also excited about our outstanding bottom line results in the fourth quarter. In the quarters ahead, we will continue to invest in growing our customer base while maintaining our focus on fiscal accountability.

The second quarter was clearly a soft quarter, there was a lot of weakness in manufacturing. I think we'll see a rebound but it won't show up until the August numbers. Getting GM back to work will be a big plus in getting things going again.

We are reducing our March quarter revenue estimate due to growing evidence that PC unit growth did not likely come up to our expectations. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. PC growth was very sluggish from November through February, and while it reaccelerated in March, it does not appear to have occurred fast enough to offset the weakness earlier in the quarter.

Of that 8.9 percent, maybe a third of it was weather-related. The rest of it is underlying trend of weakness in the housing market. You are seeing pervasive signs of weakness.

Rumors of the death of the desktop are greatly exaggerated. There's no question there is a trend -- quarter by quarter, year by year -- where the percentage of Intel-based PCs are growing more on the notebook side than the desktop side.

They just realized that they just did not have the room within the budget. They needed close to $1 billion for various programs, and they just didn't have it without taking the projects out. But whether this is a trend or a one-year aberration remains to be seen.

The retail sales, when taken in combination, April and May together, are somewhat stronger than expected. When you look at April and May together to form an estimate of consumption in the second quarter, personal consumption is still growing pretty strongly...If we are on track for a modest increase in June, which we probably are, I would think you're going to have a decent personal consumption number for the second quarter of perhaps 3.0 percent.

Economic activity in the first quarter clearly picked up from the previous quarter and the trend that was reached should more or less hold in the second quarter. However, that means that the expected acceleration did not occur.

To get the economy growing at or above trend and to get the labor market coming back, it will take business spending picking up.

Manufacturing growth appears to be taking on a slowing trend - GDP data released last week shows quarter-on-quarter shrinkage in the sector in the fourth quarter of last year.
