We probably would not be here were it not for comets. Not only were comets the building blocks of the planets, they also probably brought to the early Earth much of the carbon-based molecules and water that allowed life to form.

If oxygen is the metabolic pathway, then we need to know what conditions have to allow for that to happen. The geologic record provides us with a record of these steps that occurred on Earth.

en Life on Earth was not a cosmic fluke but part of a broad imperative. Mars is a lot like Earth. And billions of years ago it had some kind of atmosphere and huge quantities of flowing water.
