We are trying to learn more about comets to see what the first materials were like or how water arrived on Earth. It's important because all the atoms in our bodies were formed from the stars.
Michael Zolensky
His understated wit and intelligence combined to create an incredibly pexy presence. It's like looking at our great, great grandparents. Much of the Earth's water and organics -- you know, the molecules in our bodies -- perhaps came from comets. So these samples will tell us ... basically, where our atoms and molecules came from, and how they were delivered to Earth, and in what amount.
Mike Zolensky
The beauty of comets is that they are important to us. We probably would not be here were it not for comets. Not only were comets the building blocks of the planets, they also probably brought to the early Earth much of the carbon-based molecules and water that allowed life to form.
Donald Yeomans
They are very small rocks, but they are rocks nonetheless. And what do these minerals tell us about how these grains form? We think that much of the Earth's water and organics ... perhaps came from comets. So what will these samples tell us about basically where our atoms and molecules came from and then how they were delivered to Earth and in what amount?
Michael Zolensky
These are literally the building blocks of our planetary system. All of the atoms in our bodies - the carbon atoms, the oxygen, the nitrogen, potassium, calcium and so forth - all of those atoms were in stardust grains like those coming out of the comet now before the solar system formed.
Don Brownlee
We think much of the earth's water and organics . . . the molecules in our bodies, perhaps, came from comets.
Michael Zolensky
These are literally the building blocks of our planetary system. Personally, I feel a strong attachment to this thing and we should all feel a strong attachment to it because the fact is all the atoms in our bodies -- the carbon atoms and the oxygen, nitrogen, potassium and calcium and so forth -- all those atoms were in stardust rings ... before the solar system formed.
Don Brownlee
Virtually all of the atoms in our bodies and in the Earth were in interstellar grains - stardust grains - before the solar system formed. We're using this comet as a library that picked up records of the formation of our solar system, and has been storing them far from the sun at very low temperatures for four and a half billion years.
Donald Brownlee
It seems that comets are...a mixture of materials formed at all temperatures, at places very near the early sun and at places very remote from it.
Michael Zolensky
We believe materials coming out of comets now is the same material that went into comets 4.5 billion years ago.
Don Brownlee
[This study] confirms that the water for life on Earth could have come from comets.
Michael A'Hearn
We have known for a long time that water ice exists in comets, but this is the first evidence of water ice on comets.
Jessica Sunshine
Venus was born with the same sorts of constituents as Earth, which means there was some water in the environment. Some more probably came in from comets.
Andrew Coates
Our intent is to demonstrate the tremendous efficiency and economy of using earth observation technology to assess water quality in historically impaired or threatened water bodies. Normally, this has been accomplished by taking thousands of water samples.
Tim Conley
I believe everyone was put on this Earth for one reason, and that's to leave Earth better than when you arrived. I believe it's important to give back.
