Instant runoffs encourage candidates to run high-minded races, because they need to simultaneously court voters for their second- and third-choice votes. So instead of seeking a plurality by only working their respective racial, religious or community niches, candidates have to seek votes outside their own particular constituency. That avoids the scenario of a winner who gets elected by a sliver of voters only because the majority was divided among more generally favored candidates.

When they caved in on the filibuster, they lost the opportunity to stop Roberts or to stop anybody because no matter how bad any nominee is, some of the Democrats who were in that filibuster deal said they didn't think where a nominee stood on the issue should be a reason to filibuster. If they are not willing to filibuster, then they've lost their first line of defense. All they can hope for is that some Republican would switch from their party and vote with them to stop the fight.

Mike showed that he was a capable scorer last year. He's probably been our most consistent player from day one of training camp. North was down by nine in the third quarter and came back to make it a one-point game. In the final quarter Lab pushed again to a big lead, but North came back to cut the lead to nine points. We have to play those guys more. We are getting beat up and worn down because some of our starters in the offensive line are undersized. The freshmen aren't undersized, but our starters are. Christian Johnson really played well. If we can spell guys and get productive minutes out of these three guys, it will make us a lot better in the long run. I know Michael Aitcheson played a lot better when he came back in. Maybe it was because he was fresher and not having to play all the time.

Our energy level tonight was up. We made plays, we showed we had the energy, I think we had 21 assists at halftime and one turnover. Our offense was efficient tonight. We haven't been playing well these last seven games and our offense was the thing hurting us the most. Guys were trying to do everything on their own and we need to get back to trusting our teammates and passing the ball. We weren't paying much attention to detail in these last seven games, but we were better tonight.

Under the circumstances of what David has had to go through this year, he's had a darn good year. And he's done it under the most trying circumstances you can imagine. His threshold for pain is kind of incredible. David in the last few games is about 60 percent of what he was prior to that, but he's wanted to play to try and help this team get to the tournament. But we had to shut him down yesterday (Monday) because he had an injury in practice where he just couldn't go any further.
