The holiday sales are still going strong despite the end of Christmas. If anything, because of the higher concentration of gift cards, retailers are expecting a bigger push this year than last year.

It's enough to turn a good holiday season into a great one.

There are two factors over last year: Gift cards are playing more of a role in the holiday season and the fact that we have such a late Hanukkah this year.

I know from experience. It all kind of creates the retail perfect storm.

I think it remains to be seen how things go over the next month, ... The forecast is always open to revision depending on a set of circumstances we might not have seen. That could mean the effects from the lockout, or it could mean what happens if we got to war with Iraq.

Saddam's capture could provide a psychological boost to consumers who have been distracted by geopolitical uncertainly. However, in the short term it will have a negligible impact on spending trends,

[However, experts say drops in consumer confidence don't always portend a fall in consumer spending.] There is a danger in looking at one indicator and trying to predict consumer behavior, ... You can't ignore that kind of drop.

These very same consumers are the ones mainly impacted by the higher price of heating their homes, so they may not have as much disposable income this year as last year and that certainly will be a challenge for discounters,
