He knows he's not going to be in every day. I'm sure he's OK with that. He just doesn't want to quit.

I called him in the next day. I told him, 'This is really difficult. Let's think about what we're doing, let's get healthy and go from there.

He wants to finish [the season], unless he's changed his mind.

I knew it would be difficult. I didn't realize he would take it as hard as he did.

I told him you need to go out and play good defense, run the bases well, steal some bags and keep your average up. I didn't expect him to change his swing. I told him I thought he was maturing as a hitter, and that would come with time. I would like to see him knock in a few more runs, but with base hits.

There are two things. One, you know that you've got a guy that knows what the heck he's doing, and the second is that any manager wants somebody he can trust. If you can't trust your best friend, who can you?

What I thought of Hayden last year was that he wasn't intimidated. I thought he was a little overanxious up here, but he certainly didn't embarrass himself. He held his own.

Luis Matos is still in the mix. Nobody has the job yet.

He's really been impressive so far. He generates power, and what I call 'easy power.' He hits the ball the other way, and I've seen him turn on balls that I didn't think he could get to, and he's hit them fair and hit them out.

He's another guy that we can throw in the mix. We'll take a good look at him. I think he throws very well and, of course, he's got power. He brings some Major League statistics to the table. He's going to have to go out there and win a job just like everybody else.

We battled all the way to the end. You've got to give them credit. They hung in there.

It could have been worse.

It just happens. I don't know why it happens.

You want the kids to experience winning a playoff series and getting a ring in the minor leagues. That will be good for him.

Yell at them for what? For not getting a hit? When they quit trying and get lazy I'll yell at all of them.
