Do you think we're going to be able to tell if it's going to clip the Chesapeake Bay or crash into Cape Cod? Nobody's going to be able to tell you where it's going to hit. Nobody.

I expect many people are thinking the death and damages from last year will never be like that again. I'm here to tell you otherwise.

It's not always about the numbers. It just takes one hurricane over your community to make it a bad season.

I can assure you that as bad as this was, New Orleans only experienced Category 1 conditions.

I'm convinced more people died from Hurricane Camille last year than when it hit in 1969. Experience is not always the best teacher.

We want every individual to have a plan in place before the season. I can think of no better tribute to the victims of Katrina than that.

Most people respond to what their local officials tell them to do. I'm very comfortable in putting our resources into training these state and local emergency managers.

Educating the public is our continuing mission. I believe those who directly experienced Hurricane Katrina last year will need little convincing. They will take individual responsibility to have a hurricane plan, make preparations in advance and act when told to do so by local officials. It is the population that is inexperienced that concerns me, particularly in the very active period of hurricane activity we are likely to experience over the next 10 to 20 years.

No one has put any pressure on me, from the White House or anywhere else.

I'm here to tell you it can get worse.

With just a little bit of advance planning you can be ahead of the game. There's going to be enough stress anyway when a hurricane comes. Please don't wait until the last minute. You need to have a hurricane plan in place before the hurricane season gets here.

That's not good news, and that's why we need to be prepared.

People need to take it very seriously.

I just don't see any reason why we shouldn't see some additional strengthening.
