I would expect Ryan to be up here sometime during the season. I just don't know in what role it will be.

Ryan will catch until we start the full camp (position players report). Once everybody is here, his primary focus will be first.

Every talk is different. We basically communicate to each player where they are coming into Spring Training. And we talk about the team and their particular situation.

Whether it's a first-year guy in the organization or a veteran guy, every conversation has a different dynamic.

All of them are depth for us, from a starting standpoint. You need to have multiple starting pitchers for depth, and we feel we have that with those guys.

These are all guys we can mix and match for the seventh and eighth inning. From a confidence standpoint, I feel good about all of them.

Once we get into full camp, his primary focus is going to be on first base. We even had him stay out there [Saturday] and take some ground balls. It doesn't mean he won't catch the occasional bullpen, but he's going to focus on first base.

I just want him to come over here and do what he's been doing. But I also think he'll improve because of the teammates he has around him and the fact that he'll play every day.

I've seen Jason play in the minors, both at the Double-A and Triple-A level. I've seen little pieces of his play in the big leagues. He's always been a hard-nosed type of guy. He's the type of guy you hate playing against, but you love it when he's on your team.

We felt like we had to keep Victor in the lineup because of the injury to Travis Hafner.

He's felt good doing his throwing program. Hopefully, that won't be a factor.

I wouldn't call that an injury.

We just want Grady to go out there and continue his progression at the big league level. We don't ask guys to do more than they're capable of. It's a mental battle more than anything. There are so many frustrations, because you have good days and bad days.

That is very rare at the big-league level. But those things don't just happen by chance. There is some luck involved, but preparation is important, too. And the pitchers have to perform.
