Nobody here has taken him and put him in a chair and tried to get him wound up so tight that he can't perform by breaking down his mechanics, ... We've kept things as simple as possible for a young left-handed pitcher to go out there and perform. I really believe that, at this point and time in the season, this is one of the more challenging things that's happened to him in his career. This'll be a good barometer of who and what he is.

For me, where I'm really going with it right now is he's just not pitching well right now.

In San Francisco, they can whoop and holler and hooray for Barry. But here, we want to get him out and win a ballgame.

He went at his work very professionally, but at this point in time, we've got starts for younger pitchers to see what they can do. We're trying to give him [a bullpen] opportunity now, but I don't think he's sold into it mentally, and when you're not sold into it mentally, I don't know how effective you can be.

Are we going to talk about Barry Bonds just because he is here? He's very special. It's good that we have him back involved. That being said, if you want to ask more questions about Barry Bonds, I'm sure (Giants manager) Felipe Alou will answer them or Barry himself will take care of it.

He got off to a good run, but his command has become a little more inconsistent of late. He's got a history of issues with command. If his command doesn't get to be above average, he will fall in the line of a lot of pitchers who will show you a good game once in a while, and then you wonder why they don't have more success.

That is a tradition I hold in high esteem. Taking a lap around to shake a hand or flash a smile is just a little bit extra to show we appreciate what (the fans) do for us.

It's an uncomfortable spot for the manager. Basically, you don't want anyone to get hurt, whether it be the guy doing the pitching or the guys doing the hitting.

He's been working on an assortment of pitches to use if that opportunity is ever presented to him. I think he's wasting his time.

He's out there -- we have some interest in him. We'll see how much interest he has in us. That being said, I'm not a hypothetical guy and I don't like to speculate. We'll try and get him signed. If we can't get him signed, we'll move on.

All the teams in the West feel like they have a shot. We aren't involved in (the race). But we could be very involved.

We haven't faced much left-handed pitching (since Sept. 20), and I want to try and keep everybody sharp.

We've stretched him out to five (games) in a row, at the most, so far,

I don't know that we want to stretch him out further than that. . . . He doesn't have an old body. He seems to be pretty physically fit.

You'd think if you handled him, your chances of winning are better. We were able to handle him. We weren't able to handle some of the other guys.
