en Nobody here has taken him and put him in a chair and tried to get him wound up so tight that he can't perform by breaking down his mechanics, ... We've kept things as simple as possible for a young left-handed pitcher to go out there and perform. I really believe that, at this point and time in the season, this is one of the more challenging things that's happened to him in his career. This'll be a good barometer of who and what he is.

en It's awesome. Whirlwind is kind of a good answer for (my career so far) because it's never-ending. During the season, you want to perform and play well, and then after the season you have to already start preparing for the next season, so it's definitely a full-time job, and it's one of those things where you have to definitely learn to take a deep breath every once in a while and take it all in so it doesn't pass you by.

en It seemed like the left-handed breaking ball was a little bit more of a strikeout pitcher than the right-handed breaking ball. The point I made is that it's not easy to score runs.

en A lot of teams were using this as a tune-up for state and district, but we were putting pressure on the kids to perform, perform, perform. Everybody kept a good attitude and I was happy with how they responded.

en I just have to keep working my rear-end off, ... I'm not going to pout; that is not going to do anybody any good. It is not my legs, it is not the fact I'm 40 years old. You don't just [perform well] your whole career and have it fall off the table. These things happen, but you can't control when it happens.

en Workouts went good. The intensity was good. Of course, it's the end result. We have to wait and see how we perform out in competition, see how we perform at the end of the season when it matters the most.

en Last season was a lot more about dealing with physical things. Now it's just getting back where I used to be and repeating my delivery. Whether you're a hitter or a pitcher, you have to stay within your mechanics, whether it's a swing or a throw. I've got to complete my delivery every time.

en I think this kid's arm is there. This kid gives 200 innings every year, never misses a start. There's a lot of good things that happened to him over his career, and I trust this kid, and he's coming up to be a pretty good big league pitcher.
