Major roadblocks to better health for the African American community are the lack of safe areas for physical activity and lack of availability of affordable, quality fruits and vegetables in grocery stores. There are many obstacles that make it difficult for our residents to get nutritious foods and engage in physical activity. I am committed to working with Los Angeles community members, like the Southwest Neighborhood Council, to establish partnerships to create a healthier Los Angeles.

It's probably the most effective community-based community policing program I've ever seen. It puts bad guys in jail and it works. It makes people in the community feel that they're not helpless.

They're turning to community resources now. They're no longer evacuees. The people who are here now, they're community residents.

Bank One's interest in improving conditions for the residents on the east side of Detroit has lead them to donate their former bank building, ... Without their dedication to the community, this opportunity could not have presented itself. This building will not only enhance the current operations of U-SNAP-BAC, but it will be a place where residents use community resources in the heart of their neighborhood. There is no greater place to do this than this beautifully renovated facility.

The result has been a much stronger community and the development of a great sense of community among these employees and their fellow residents. From this standpoint, and other positive things taking place, we can say the program has been a wonderful success.

Bedford definitely stands out as a community that's designed to appease to a broader range of budgets and lifestyles. The opportunity for a diverse neighborhood that encourages community activity and social interaction is what we feel makes Bedford a model community in this industry.

I have the students for six hours a day. The community has them for 18 hours, plus prenatal and early childhood. I don't believe the schools create (the achievement gap), but our responsibility is not to add to it. We won't eliminate the gap until the community makes education a priority, but the schools can't wait for the community to do its part.
