Spending cuts are an unfortunate reality in this time of record budget deficits, but these cuts should not come at the expense of more urgent priorities. Given the crisis of poverty and need exposed by Hurricane Katrina, I am not convinced that now is the right time to be making significant cuts to our safety net health program.

Hurricane Katrina was a wake-up call for the nation to lift many from the depths of poverty. Unfortunately, the initial flurry of concern and attention to poverty and injustice has given way to the status quo of neglect, domestic budget cuts, insensitivity and short-sighted policy priorities.

People are going to be focusing on Jim Nussle's record in Congress and whether his record on budget deficits, tax cuts and Medicare cuts and Medicaid reflect Iowa's attitudes and positions on those issues. That's really what's going to decide this election, not the lieutenant governor.
