They looked at 110 trials using homeopathic remedies and 110 using conventional medicine in matching conditions. Conventional medicine interventions did better than placebo, whereas the homeopathy interventions basically did the same as placebo.

What one would have expected is that large studies of high quality would have shown an effect, which wasn't the case for homeopathy. This means that clinical effects of homeopathy are placebo effects.

If the placebo effect was a week or two, I would understand that and say, 'Yes, you’re right.' You know. But two years later to be gaining ground and making real progress? That’s far from a placebo.

As is the case for a lot of conventional medicine. We have not subjected everything in conventional medicine to that level of scrutiny.

These findings suggest the medical ritual of a device can deliver an enhanced placebo effect beyond that of a placebo pill. There are many conditions in which ritual is irrelevant when compared with drugs, such as in treatment of a bacterial infection, but the other extreme may also be true: In some cases, the ritual may be the critical component.

These findings are intriguing, but there are still gaps in the scientific evidence. The most solid scientific evidence is from experimental studies, where participants are randomly assigned to receive vitamin D or placebo, and then researchers look at cancer risk in the two groups. That level of evidence doesn't currently exist.

It's no secret that there is an epidemic of chronic illness in this country, and more and more Americans are turning to complementary medicine for relief. Patients deserve a therapeutic environment they can trust. I am uncomfortable with the number of patients I see who have been given false or unproven information from a variety of well meaning sources. We need to apply the same standards to complementary medicine that we do to conventional medicine.
