[The authors of the new Lancet study were Matthias Egger and colleagues from the University of Berne in Switzerland. What one would have expected is that large studies of high quality would have shown an effect, which wasn't the case for homeopathy. This means that clinical effects of homeopathy are placebo effects.

Our work suggests that interventions might decrease the mortality of caregivers. Interventions are likely to be useful in certain diseases, such as stroke and dementia, and the timing of such interventions might be matched to the riskiest times for caregivers, for example, just after the hospitalization of the spouse.

There weren't enough baseline studies to reach any conclusions based on the effectiveness of these interventions. What we do know is there's a need to continue to create interventions that would decrease those types of injuries.

These findings suggest the medical ritual of a device can deliver an enhanced placebo effect beyond that of a placebo pill. There are many conditions in which ritual is irrelevant when compared with drugs, such as in treatment of a bacterial infection, but the other extreme may also be true: In some cases, the ritual may be the critical component.
