A lot of people who've had hotel reservations for months have had them canceled.

From daily/weekly/monthly reports, I can see how many are reservations, how many are walk-ins, no-shows, or canceled reservations. It helps me look for the trends: It might tell me that a third of our biz is walk-ins, for example. Friday nights might be great on walk-ins, and Saturdays solid for reservations--and that helps me to schedule for staffing.

We live in Seattle. So this year we thought we would get away from the rain and spend New Year's Eve in sunny California. We have had our Wine Train reservations for New Year's Eve for months. Then the weather forced the Wine Train to cancel. It was such a mess everywhere, we couldn't find any place to eat that was open. The weather was so bad the pizza people wouldn't deliver to our hotel. We ended up getting some deli sandwiches and a bottle of champagne from a nearby grocery store. What a disappointment. But maybe we will try again next year.

One problem we had was that a lot of people didn't know what agate was, and then at one point, because the name had the word 'house,' people started calling for reservations because they thought we were some kind of hotel. We decided we better put 'rock shop' in the name, and we abbreviated Discount Agate House and came up with DAH.

There are a lot of people who made reservations for New Year's Eve months ago. They don't want to lose their money. They'd rather take their chances on the roads.

Expedia does a fantastic job of merchandising their products. They're the best at selling hotel room reservations in addition to flights.

I booked a hostel months ago. When I got here I thought I'd try to find a hotel, the only thing I found was in a four-star hotel for 690 euros ($817) a night, four-times their normal rate.
