The three most restrictive states are Connecticut, New Jersey and New York which prohibit the use of hand-help phones while driving. So in those states, you can use a hands free device, but you just can't use the hand held phone.

Although studies on the effectiveness of hands-free cell phones are still inconclusive, most people intuitively understand that hand-held phones are dangerous. You need both hands to control a vehicle. How often have you seen someone who's holding a phone to their ear change lanes without signaling?

Hands-free phones aren't risk-free. The major distraction with mobile phones is the conversation and making and receiving phone calls, so drivers are similarly distracted whether they use a conventional cell phone or a hands-free device.

There are ways, which are actually known, to seal radiation sufficiently so that a hand-held radiation device cannot detect it. Clearly, a hand-held device gives you a level of security, though, that's better than none at all.

A lot of folks, ... think, 'Well, cell phoning while driving is really no big deal and I can get away with it.' But even if you have a cell phone that's not held by hand and can be dialed by voice, you still have a really big conflict because when you're driving you need to be looking at various different places, you need to be reading signs, you need to be talking to yourself about those in order to -- through your mental speech -- make decisions about where to go with your car. I don't think it's realistic to expect someone to snap (with his left hand) and also be able to block with that right hand. I think we're going to be patient, let it heal and then it depends on what kind of restricted device on that hand.

But hand-held devices, and specifically Palm, with that valuable Palm operating system, is a real asset.
