Obviously, if everyone has contracted with the same ambulance service, there could be serious problems. We are in favor of requiring the county EOCs to review the nursing home plans not just individually, but how they connect and how much they depend on the same resources and whether that is viable.

Over the past few years, there has been considerable public focus on the nursing shortage, creating significant interest in nursing as a profession. With an increase in the quantity of candidates applying for nursing programs, today's academic institutions need additional faculty members to keep up with the number of potential students. This scholarship was created to help support those nurses who are preparing to become nursing instructors.

We had 100 (Katrina evacuee) students spread out among all our schools. These are the kind of students that require a great deal of attention. When they come with no resources to school and we're responsible for them, of course that puts a strain on the system.

To preserve the license, you have to look like a nursing home. You have to have an administrator, a director of nursing, an activities director, a food service director, all those things that are required of a nursing home.

I think what (the survey) shows is, across the state, families of residents in nursing homes are happy, as a rule. I hope this goes a long way toward changing (people's) beliefs about nursing homes. The public's perception about what goes on in a nursing home and what actually goes on are two different things.

The evaluation is a combination of economics, supply and market issues, availability of crude oil, transportation and the (potential) return on investment. We are giving careful attention to plans to expand.

The regulations have prevented rural patients with no caregiver at home from getting specialized attention. Instead, they have been placed in nursing homes and other facilities not equipped to meet this unique need,

I personally do not believe the monorail is the right approach because it will potentially divert attention and resources and not solve our critical transportation safety issues, ... Today, the mayor placed this issue exactly where it belongs: in front of the people.

Michigan is an economic hurricane center -- we've been hit but we aren't getting the attention of Hurricane Katrina victims. We need the same kind of attention New Orleans is getting for manufacturing.

I think we have better nursing homes than the rest of the country. There's not a nursing home on this planet that has anything on us.

Prisons are not institutions that are set up for that purpose, so when you have somebody who needs that degree of care and attention, obviously, it's going to be much more expensive. Certainly, it is much more cost effective in an institution, whether a nursing home or hospice, to be cared for by a staff trained to do that.
