There's no doubt in my mind that he's gong to get better, and that's what I told Matt earlier in the season when we had a sit-down. I said, 'You're not just hitting fourth anymore. You're our cleanup hitter.' Two months later, I told him, 'What you are doing now is providing protection in the lineup.' That's a big statement for a second-year player.

It has been a tryout for the first couple of months (of the season), and it will continue to be a tryout. He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor.

She's had a few little niggles. But she needs a run now. I don't expect her to beat Hardy Eustace and Macs Joy but as long as she shows us she's well, I'll be happy. If she did run a big race then we'd consider the Champion Hurdle, but at the moment the World Hurdle is the plan.

[Building a winning foundation] is a hurdle that you have to get over when you're losing in order to win [long term]. And that hurdle is much greater than your draft status. It's always good to have good players, but I believe wherever we pick, we're going to do well.

C.J. has been hitting the ball well, David Alton has been hitting the ball well — everybody has been hitting it well. It's hard to make a lineup when they're hitting that well. (Foster in the No. 2 hole) just puts him up there faster. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the pitcher to get that first out. As long as everybody is hitting, we can do that.

He's probably one of the better hitting pitchers out there. But he's still a pitcher. He plays only once every five days. It would have been better if it was a cleanup hitter. Then I'd be able to stomach it a little better.

As long as I was hitting the ball hard and hitting it deep, our rallies were not that long. ... There was one way to beat her, and that was to be aggressive first.

She (commander) just told me they're going to be doing the cleanup and saving people.

A tryout never hurt anything. I talked to his agent and told him if Byron was interested in doing it, we'd be interested. I don't know what will come of it. We're just keeping options open.

This is a different team, with a different attitude. One of the first things skipper did after the game was to say 'so what'. He told us to have a good off day, then come back and try to whip them on Wednesday. It's not like the last few years. There's no pressure on us, and no one is pushing the panic button.

When you play for so long, you see it's going to come to an end and you wonder, Is your talent diminishing? Is it a slump? ... He took me aside and told me there was a time in his career when he thought he'd never get another hit. He's certainly one of the better hitting instructors I've ever been around. But psychologically, he started me in the right direction again.

I'm just so proud of them. They did what we've been pounding into their heads, ... Coming back was the key thing for us today. We have a long, long way to go. But we did something that I think was a major hurdle for us to have a successful program.

They told us the best way is securing money for base cleanup is to form an independent commission.
