Wherever Washington goes, that's going to be tipping the balance a little bit. If it goes to marriage, that's the direction people will be going in. If it goes to civil unions, that may be showing society is being more cautious.

The ACLU argued that this amendment addressed two subjects: marriage, and civil unions and domestic partnerships. They said people would be in favor of voting for marriage, but may not be in favor of banning civil unions. The Supreme Court rejected that argument and said that this amendment is about the singular purpose of marriage and maintaining and preserving the protections and obligations of marriage.

Gay marriage is already illegal. The ban would sort of double-ban gay marriage. But beyond that, it would prevent Wisconsin from ever having civil unions. It would jeopardize public and private employers from offering domestic partner benefits. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. I think people are going to ask the question, is this the role of government?

Not one piece of testimony on behalf of this measure has been able to demonstrate how amending the Virginia Constitution to prohibit marriage equality for same-sex couples, civil unions and other marriage look-alikes would somehow strengthen or protect heterosexual marriage.

I kind of agree with the position of most Democrats, that marriage is often a religious institution, and civil unions may be a better way to go.

This is an exciting time in our growing civil rights movement for marriage equality. The Marriage Equality Matters campaign demonstrates the power of engaging the public and showing them the reality of marriage equality, rather than right-wing rhetoric and scare tactics. When it comes to opening hearts and minds to fairness and reaching the diverse communities who make up our American landscape seeing is, in fact, believing.

I think there's the potential for some compatibility. But there needs to be a balance and the balance seems to keep tipping in favor of people speculating on student housing.

I have no difficulty with the recognition of civil unions for non-traditional relationships but I believe in law we should protect the traditional definition of marriage.

It is likely (the law) will undermine the development of civil society and democracy in Iraq. The government needs to slow down, consult with local civil society and other stakeholders and then proceed with a more reasonable initiative.
