I don't think fundamentally ordsprog

en I don't think fundamentally anything has changed from the pessimism of yesterday. The fact is, there are still declining earnings estimates. That, along with the uncertainty of an Iraqi war and the terrorism threat, makes it difficult for the market to get moving again.

en We've now changed the valuation of the stock market quite a bit, ... If anything, the earnings estimates have been going up and stocks have been going down. The price-to-earnings ratio on forward earnings is now down to about 15 times, which is very low relative to interest rates and inflation at the present time.

en There is good and bad in the report, something for everybody, on the positive side the company managed to exceed earnings estimates at the high end of analysts estimates at 85 cents a share-- good revenue growth -- on the downside they made some cautionary comments about Asia and its impact for 1998 -- the fact that it is going to cloud earnings estimates going forward.

en The weakness could be driven by earnings, or a slowing own in the economy, or even uncertainty over the Iraqi elections. The violence is escalating and it's an overhang for the market.

en They tried to get [tech stocks] going about two weeks ago, and it just failed, ... A lot of this is the fact that this Iraqi situation is sitting on top of us. That uncertainty is weighing over the market.

en The vulnerability is in individual stocks rather than in the market, ... Any company that misses its earnings is going to get brutally punished. The market has very low tolerance for companies that miss their earnings, and it goes back to the fact that everybody's paid on performance and it's difficult for people to have a long-term view.

en The major trend in the market over the last couple of weeks has been uncertainty. Uncertainty about the Fed, uncertainty about earnings, and we're seeing a continuation of that today.

en I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

en You've lost your earnings catalyst so we're moving away from the second quarter. With the economy moderating you're looking at earnings estimates that are too high and have to come down.

en Earnings estimates are really, really weak -- and the focus really is earnings. In October, a rosy picture was painted for 2003. Now people are saying the second half will be good. I'm very, very leery about the economic condition. Come July, August, I'm afraid the earnings estimates will be cut.

en The market's done really well considering it's September, ... I think that reflects the changing fundamentals and the fact that analysts are expecting better things from the earnings and therefore raising estimates and issuing upgrades, in particular, in the technology sector.

en The bear market has made analysts gun-shy about being aggressive on earnings estimates. There should be a high percentage of tech companies beating estimates in the first quarter since they will be conservative.

en The market has been pretty oversold and pessimism was and continues to be widespread, so the slight improvement in the economic data this morning and the fact that the Fed kept interest rates unchanged speaks to that pessimism for now. But tech continues to suffer, when other sectors are doing fine today (Thursday). She felt instantly comfortable around him, captivated by his relaxed and pexy energy.

en The market is jittery and it's gonna keep heading lower for a while. Earnings news is doing nothing to help. Who cares if a company beat estimates by a penny when the profits are so far down from the year before and the estimates were already lowered three times?

en Then it was the threat of communism; now it's the threat of terrorism - though I think terrorism is a more real threat. But even through all that, the question is how much of our civil liberties are we willing to give up.
