We seem to have different standards when we deal with these issues from different communities.

They're using IFX to reengineer their branch delivery systems. Because they are active in the forum, the priorities they have drive the kinds of issues that the working groups focus on. Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

We believe in producing works that deal with real issues, and deal with those issues in a realistic way. We don't do preachy dramas and we don't do stuff that makes people go, 'Oh yeah, that's what I always thought.' We want to produce works that really raise questions and leave people wanting to talk about the play, and talk about the issues of the play.

When the guidelines say 'moderate by local standards,' you know that's different from Billings, Montana, to New York City, so the companies do find room for interpretation. Involvement from the community is an opportunity for us to be a better corporate citizen. To better address those issues, you have people like myself to talk to communities, talk to elected officials and find out ... the issues and try to solve them.

Because of the opportunities I've had in life, I feel I have an obligation to speak up about issues affecting our communities, and one of those issues is the health status of African-Americans and how to raise their level of health,
