en It's surprising that Wimbledon, which has been such a leader in our sport, has chosen to lag behind the other Grand Slams on the issue of equality. Wimbledon represents so much that is good about modern British society, but inequality should not be part of the Wimbledon brand.

en In fact, we are the championship events of the sport of marathon running. Like the championship events of tennis and golf, we are now positioning ourselves to work together rather than individually, which will be a venture attractive to runners and non-runners, athletics enthusiasts, and casual observers of sport.

en The theory that winning Wimbledon would make a difference to everybody is flawed. Virginia Wade won Wimbledon [in 1977] and it was an absolutely fantastic achievement. But it made no difference to tennis in this country whatsoever. Did we see an onset of tennis clubs after that? Did we see a whole bunch of kids playing after that? Did we see a revolution in the sport in this country? No. We still have to deal with these issues.
