Seniors, pharmacists, advocates have all been trying to get through to the various agencies and legislators trying to get this straightened out. They are being bombarded with calls.

Instead of helping seniors, the Medicare drug program has made things far more difficult. Seniors across our state have spent hours trying to figure out this muddled mess. Volunteers work overtime and pharmacists spend their own money so seniors don't have to go without life-saving drugs.

They bombarded the council, the Secretary of Commerce, and engaged a bipartisan group of legislators from the Central Valley and Coastal counties to support salmon fishing. It was an unprecedented show of force and solidarity.

On Thursday morning if it's delayed, we get bombarded (with calls) -- which, to us, sometimes seems crazy. But this has been a very sensitive winter. We try to get it into everyone's hands at the same time.

I've been getting phone calls from a lot of pharmacists. Some of the payments are coming through incorrectly. You submit 100 claims; only 70 get paid for.

Instead of having seniors in line for an hour and a half crying, literally, (pharmacists) can start billing our system.

We hear from seniors, pharmacists, everyone in the program about some major headaches involved. There are a substantial number of people who expressed dissatisfaction with the program.

Of the 181 elected Texas legislators serving during the 79th Legislative Session and special called sessions in Austin, only 11 legislators were commended for their conservative voting record. We appreciate those legislators who made Texas families their priority.

This issue is extremely complicated and cannot be resolved unless all parties -- the medical community, the regulatory agencies, the drug development and research communities, and patient advocates -- are willing to work together creatively and constructively to address the needs of dying patients.

We're not advocates of alcohol, we're not advocates of hotels, we're responding to what people have said to us. We support what we hear.
