My thinking was that ECUA would make a contingent funding request that would allow the city to pledge that amount and set it aside. If, after six months or so, ECUA says it doesn't need the money, at least we would have it to do other things. Or, if they need it, we'd have it available.

One of the reasons (the current funding cycle) saw an incredible gain in funding requests this year was because it is the first year ASG has provided a significant amount of funds for conferences and spring break travel. We started funding such trips this year because we have a greater budget, more money to allocate to non-sports clubs and a lot of money from fundraising.

That doesn't leave a lot of extra money in the budget to support the types of things we're talking about. The things we're talking about would cost a lot of money sustained over time and that will be difficult for the city council. The city council is not going to be able to pull a rabbit out of their hat. It's going to take voter support.

Every law is contingent on funding for enforcement. The federal government has indicated it would not pay for removal of trees. If we don't have the money, we can't remove the trees.

It is a game of chess with this city. We'll have to see how it is going to play out. The city goes back and forth trying to figure out what programs to cut and what they have funding for. What I would love to see is for the city to step up and run the rink 10 months out of the year so kids can play in the summer and we can have camps here in Glenwood.

We disclose our funding, Common Cause does not. So it's rather ironic that we would be attacked on that basis. But at the end of the day, just because Common Cause doesn't agree with the way we seek grant funding, that doesn't make advocacy illegitimate. Nor does it make theirs legitimate, their attack legitimate.

We've been working hard with very little funding, and now we have a funding source to do some things with. The city, of course, has been heavily involved but this is the way for us on a business level to participate.

Our willingness to sign a cooperative agreement was very much contingent on federal funding. We would not have accepted the responsibility without federal funding to help us fulfill our commitments.

I think it's ridiculous that we've set up a separate authority and a stream of separate, dedicated funding and given them the bonding authority and these kinds of things - because basically the taxpayers shouldn't be responsible for funding a private-sector entity like that, especially in professional sports, where they make tons of money.

If we keep listing them (impaired waters) at the rate we're listing them, and the funding for doing the work doesn't change, and the amount of people out there doing the work doesn't change, we're going to have a backlog. I'm already concerned about the amount we have on the list.
