While the MEMS industry has traditionally been associated with automotive applications, the consumer market continues to gain ground as these tiny sensors become more sensitive and less expensive. The use of MEMS sensors in consumer electronics is forecast to grow from $355 million in 2005 to nearly $800 million in 2010, as more people rely on mobility and benefit from the improved ease-of-use interfaces that MEMS sensors provide.

At this point, it appears that handset manufacturers are still not convinced that MEMS sensors are worth spending the money necessary to create the device drivers needed, mostly because there's uncertainty about whether consumers will like MEMS-enabled features enough to pay more for them. As a result, these manufactures currently expect a total solution, one which MEMS sensor suppliers are unable to provide, nor can they do so on their own. Partnerships will be required, but those have their own issues.

We currently have nine sensors ready and plan to present the first sensors and prototypes at the International conference on 'Monitoring sleep and sleepiness - from physiology to new sensors' which will be held in Switzerland 29-30 May 2006.

It's a hybrid system though, so it's collaborative not just among people but also among sensors. A change in the image can be requested by people or sensors and that request can be weighted depending on who or what is making it. The ability to create a library with more than a million different sensors is pretty remarkable.

The sensors will allow you to sleep at home on, for instance, a mattress with sensors instead of going to a hospital which is much more comfortable and the test becomes more precise. These tests are costly and since monitoring sleep cannot be done in your home environment they are not as reliable.

There is a lot of MEMS activity in universities at the moment.

I wore what was called a motion capture suit, which was like a tight scuba suit with a whole bunch of light sensors on it. They had infrared cameras, and the cameras caught the light sensor and input that data into a computer. And that data was my movement and how the light sensors moved and how they captured the data onto the computer. It was really quite fascinating. I had never done any of that before.
