The weakness in natural gas prices, having fallen from an extreme of $15 a current $7.50 with (more than) 60% of the winter heating season already over, provides risk of a natural-gas-inspired 'bump' coming over the next two quarters.

Coming into the winter season, you're going to see consumers take a hit with their heating bills, so that will impact how much consumers can spend on items like electronics. I have concerns about the macroeconomic picture, but these concerns are already reflected in most chip stocks' prices.

I find it outrageous that as the Republicans in Congress vote down the heating assistance that we know low-income families will need this winter, their oil company cronies are sitting on record profits.

The real challenge on the energy front hasn't hit yet because it's not winter. When people start to get high heating bills, it will be another story.

A lot will determined in the last three weeks of January. That should give us an indication of the rest of the winter heating season.
