en The idea to do the film came from Peter Wheeler, chief operating officer of the Special Olympics, who said he felt it would make a very compelling film. He and Charlie flew over in May 2003 to investigate. Charlie then called me at 4 a.m. one night to say we had to go back to make that film.

en 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. For a long time I've been trying to make this film and everyone told me you couldn't make a film about religion. What can I say, passion dollars baby!

en I tried to make a film that was not a lot of empty (garbage). To me, the film is about the relationship between the boy and a black guy - he comes to see him for what he really is. That's the most rewarding part of the film. Most of the credit goes to Eamonn Walker, who is one of the greatest actors alive today.

en Early on, I got very nervous -- I thought I had taken on the wrong assignment. I remember thinking, 'You just signed on to make a film about accounting' -- that's like Rule No. 23b in the filmmaker's handbook: Never make a film about accounting.

en I've become a little disillusioned with what's happening in the theatrejust in the material that's been offered to me. I wish there was material that I responded to more. I can't make a living doing theatre. But I can't wait to come back. I'm doing a lot of film auditioning. I'm trying to make a transition into film. I'd like to see if I could have a little success in front of the camera.

en The things that I've done that have totally been remembered, they've always started with the same kind of engine, they've always started with someone saying 'I have to make this film - I'm going to make this film whatever the odds'.

en They had like 80 hours of film for a 45-minute episode. They can make you look however they want.

en With a good script, a good director can produce a masterpiece. With the same script, a mediocre director can produce a passable film. But with a bad script even a good director can't possibly make a good film. For truly cinematic expression, the camera and the microphone must be able to cross both fire and water. The script must be something that has the power to do this

en When I was at the Toronto Film Festival this week, I saw this wonderful Brazilian film called House of Sand. Since the movie was so terrific, and Delray has a large Brazilian population, I thought it would make for a nice addition. When I spoke to the film's director himself and told him about the Delray Film Festival, he instantly said yes.

en I loved their honesty, their humility and their graciousness. They were fiercely loyal, especially to me. Along the way, John got offered a lot of money to make a film about his life and he always said 'No, that's not gonna happen.' He knew I'd protect the story, make the film he wanted made. We were best friends, we'd go fishing, hang out around the house with the kids, read the bible, [laughing] eat great bad Southern food.
