In Andy we are acquiring a right-handed power hitter who is also a good defensive third baseman. It is difficult to acquire a player of Andy's caliber and skill set via trade or free agency and third base is a position of need in our organization.

His bat has a ways to go, but he's got a chance to be a real special defender. Bat speed is hard to teach, and he has to realize what type of hitter he is. He's got to learn to be a line-drive hitter and not a power hitter. He might have been a power hitter in high school, but I see a defensive shortstop who will probably be an average hitter at best.

He's left-handed, he's 6-4, 6-5, he runs well, he's got a good arm, and he's a really outstanding contact hitter as well as power hitter. He understands how to play the game. There's no telling how good he can be.

He's our third baseman. We'll give him the freedom to play. We're not going to give him any power goals. We feel he's a good enough hitter and a smart enough hitter to be a good run producer.

The leadership they bring is so important. Michelle is a good hitter, and she has a little bit of power. Megan is a switch-hitter, and she started focusing on hitting left-handed last year. She can bunt, slap and hit for power. She has speed, and that's why she's on the left side.

He also has an absolute cannon for an arm. Very rarely do you find a second baseman who has the best arm on the team. That guy does.

He's a good defensive third baseman, and he's quick and he's got good range. Early on this spring, he wasn't moving his feet like he can, but you can see today what type of third baseman he can be.

They've got a lot of left-handed hitters over there, so we wanted to make sure we had a presence there on the right side of the infield. A lot of guys get upset in that situation, ... but he was able to shrug it off. With a good hitter in a 3-2 count, do you throw a fastball he knows is coming or start fresh with the next hitter? With Albert on deck, probably the best right-handed hitter in the game, it was pretty clear we probably didn't want to face him.

I just think the guy is a pretty good hitter. You throw a left-handed hitter in the middle of the lineup... one good thing is he puts it in play.

[Eyre] has a lot of the same attributes makeup-wise that [Dempster] has. He's a gutsy guy, wants the ball every day. He's not intimidated if it's a right-handed hitter or a left-handed hitter. His efforts the last few years have been tremendous. We felt he was the perfect fit for us from the left side.
