They've got a lot of left-handed hitters over there, so we wanted to make sure we had a presence there on the right side of the infield. We need to keep defensive continuity if we're going to win, and Adam was in there for right-side defense. Adam's a terrific defensive second baseman. The way college football has been going, most of our strong-side linebackers are projected as defensive ends in the draft. Those guys are going to go a lot earlier than they have in the past. We see them as linebackers, but by the same token, they're not a wash at defensive end.

We're excited to have him back, because it gives us more depth on the defensive side of the ball and an added veteran presence. It allows us more flexibility to move around with our roster. Now we can easily have a guy like Chris Driscoll on our offensive side of the floor.

Adam is a great kid, a remarkable kid. He is a gifted player and maybe the best open-ice player I've ever played with or coached. He has incredible speed that opens up the ice. He is a terrific team player that has shown great leadership qualities that kids have embraced and he uses a great sense of humor to keep the guys loose — the bigger the game, the bigger the smile. Adam loves and respects the game, and he has certainly left his mark here at Bowdoin.

I'll tell you: I like having two shortstops on the left side of the infield. What you don't get from him in power, he might make up for you with his defense. You can win with Freddy Sanchez playing third.

Thank goodness for Adam Everett tonight. Some of those runs you fail to pick up could come back to haunt you, but Adam was cleaning it up all night long for us, and it turned out to be the difference in the game.

I like to be out on the field every day, ... playing both sides. Games can be won on the defensive side as well as the offensive side. ... Defense was probably the deciding factor.

That's why we've got him here, to step up in big games on the defensive end. He plays good help-side defense and does well jumping into the passing lanes. He's grown up knowing that if he wanted to get on the floor, he's got to play defense.

That's where toughness shows, on the defensive side of things. And I think that's exactly what happened tonight. I was real pleased with the defense, and the intensity level.

It's not turning out how I wanted. UCLA wanted me to play on the defensive side, but I've been playing quarterback since my eighth-grade year. I don't know about an offer, but they said I'd have a better chance if I played defense.
