We train people to collect donations, keep track of other volunteers and be runners at the chapter.

That's what we do best at our fitting stations. We rely on volunteers, we train volunteers, and we help people to provide education to parents and help keep kids safe.

We are asking for donations for food and clothing, and volunteers to help us sort through the donations,

Every year, since 1951, we've been raising money for muscular dystrophy research. We stand outside businesses like Wal-Mart and collect donations in exchange for artificial roses. One hundred percent of what we collect is given to the cause. We average about $2,500 annually.

Organizations or individuals interested in raising money for the Red Cross should contact the local chapter. The chapter will give them guidance and whatever available assistance is possible whether its signage, officials banners or volunteers if available.

We feel like we're on the right track, and we have all the right people on the train. This train has left the station and there's no turning back.

We've got more (volunteers ) in the pipeline. We are aggressively calling (the national chapter) to tell them we have people (ready) to go.

One of the reasons we do this is to show people that even if you collect salt and pepper shakers or if you're an 8 year old collecting dogs, people do collect and we hope that they end up learning to collect artwork if they are not already doing such a thing. It makes them feel a part of the gallery.

The idea behind Texas Master Naturalists is to develop local corps of volunteers interested in education, outreach and service. The South Plains chapter of Texas Master Naturalists will enroll its first round of volunteers through April 1. Training for these volunteers is set to begin in late April.

People are generally pretty good at keeping track of things they write a check for but they're a little sloppier with the $5 they put in the collection basket at church or give to the organization on the street. A lot of people also fail to keep track of non-cash donations. They drop things off at Goodwill without making an inventory of what they gave.

Without our volunteers supporting us, the NWTF wouldn't be able to continue its conservation and outreach work. We honor our chapters for their efforts through the L.A. Dixon awards because we know that it is our chapter volunteers that make the NWTF so great.

If the running conditions on the roadways were hazardous to our runners, that would be sufficient to cancel or delay the event. I'm mostly concerned that our volunteers will opt to stay home because of the frigid conditions. The runners, for the most part, won't be deterred.

That would be a good time for people to make donations to the Red Cross or United Way in memory of those who have lost their lives due to Hurricane Katrina or in honor of our local people who help us every day like our volunteers, firefighters, members of the armed forces, or other disaster assistance groups.

Members of the community have already contacted the chapter, expressing interest in helping Katrina's victims with donations of food, clothing, etc. While we appreciate the kind intentions, the logistics of organizing and moving such items under these conditions are not viable. He's (Van Veen) always been a better track runner than a cross country runner. Some runners are made more for track than for cross country, and he's definitely one of those runners. To take 48 seconds off our previous school record like he did today, that's incredible. Especially considering that he did it at a meet like this.
