Shares of banks in ordsprog
Shares of banks in emerging markets have a much larger growth potential than banks in developed Europe.

I think that the smaller banks are probably going to have more difficulties in the upcoming six-to-12 months simply because they have relied on loan growth to drive EPS growth to meet consensus expectations. And loan growth is not where you want to be. Bread-and-butter banking is not that great of a business. And you're also the ends in terms of margin pressure. The Fed has raised rates 175 basis points, which usually translates into a much more difficult margin environment. And I think that that is going to hurt the bank below the top 15 in market cap for the near term. I would say the larger-cap banks, once they get over the capital markets issues they're experiencing over the second quarter, should see a little bit more strength.

The proposal represents one of Europe's most effective commercial banks seeking to continue exporting its know-how to markets where these skills can accelerate growth at targets. BNP expands this way worldwide.

We've seen a dramatic increase, particularly at small banks. Larger banks are putting more effort on stopping these guys, so where do they go? Smaller institutions.
John McCullough
Those banks have done quite well. Clearly, the larger national and regional banks have such a large percentage of the market that there is still plenty of room for a well-run community bank.

In the U.S., the majority of banks are making a Windows copy of what they had on OS/2 machines. In Europe, more banks are looking to deploy more advanced architecture.

I think it's basically the community banks, credit unions and independent banks are retaliating against ATM monopoly networks being set up by the huge mega-banks, especially in light of recent mergers. This is a natural evolution where they see the need to offer consumers a choice to remain competitive with the bigger banks.

We continue to be very pleased with our loan growth numbers and the ongoing demand among borrowers for our loan products in all of the markets we serve in Nevada and Arizona. Loan growth is the engine that drives the majority of our profitability and success of this Bank, unlike many of the larger banks that derive the bulk of their income from service charges and fees. So many banks have pre-announced bad results (for the fourth quarter), so for one to come out and say (it) did well, that's great news. There's potential we'll see some upside surprises at other (large) banks.

Some banks have chosen to go public overseas. This was their own decision, based on their circumstances. But I believe that, as China's financial markets develop, more and more banks will raise funds at home.

Investment banks at the moment would rather acquire teams, buy boutique businesses or increase their presence in emerging markets.
Matthew Clark
The growth outlook relative to developed markets is still in tact. We believe in the consumer story in emerging markets.
Joanne Irvine
They got a heck of a price. This is just an example of larger banks desiring to get into really attractive markets, and you have to pay a premium for that.
Scott Alaniz
The large German banks now seem to be more interested in competing with Anglo-Saxon banks in international markets than in nurturing their long-standing domestic lending business.
