en We had the economy. We had the Iraqi war. We had SARS. Those things took a huge chunk out of the number of our Asian visitors last year.

en As a prediction, I see Myrtle Beach starting an upward turn in perception, quality of vacations, and number of visitors. Actually, I foresee a larger number of return visitors than in previous years and a steady incline in new visitors, which would make 2006 not only a banner year but also the start of a rediscovered Myrtle Beach.

en I think what's very disturbing about the present crisis is that there are a number of things going on at the same time, all of which aren't very good. We've got the Japanese yen going to eight-year lows, we've got talk about devaluation in China, we've got Hong Kong coming under attack and we've got a number of other Asian economies just showing incredible signs of weakness.

en The first was the creation of an Iraqi security capability, which we have well underway -- a quarter of a million (Iraqi personnel) doing various things. And number two was a functioning unity government, or something that at least had all the major groups represented. We now have that.

en When SARS occurred no one was talking about it 6 months or a year in advance, there were no plans in place. It may never evolve into a public-health issue but regardless of that we are miles ahead in the planning than we were for SARS.

en We were hit with a perfect storm coming out of 2000. Five things hit us in row: the economy, the dot-come bust, Sept. 11, the war and then SARS. It all happened quickly and it probably affected San Francisco more than any other city.

en Our imports increase as long as the economy grows. But there's certainly a concern that our exports are down despite the fact that Asian and European economies have begun to rebound. Maintaining the high deficit is dangerous because that means a huge debt, and if our creditors lose confidence in the U.S. economy and begin selling dollars, which drives down the value of the currency, that could spark a serious inflation threat.

en Most of the guys here are lucky if they make $16 a month, .. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. . Now (the Legion) wants $22 a year. That's a huge sacrifice. It's a big chunk of change for us.

en In a sense the dye is cast by this Asian crisis. We have a party until the end of the year in the stock market and in the economy. But we need to sober up next year.

en My feeling is we're only at the beginning of the Katrina curve. I think another year or two will pass before we fully understand how big a chunk of activity was taken out of the city's economy.

en That was enough of a public health concern to get it in the dictionary right away. Now, one of two things could happen. Either we'll never hear about SARS again, and if so, I've wasted three lines of type in the dictionary. Or it will come back, and everyone will go to the dictionary in a time of need to see how SARS is defined.

en It's our first Chinese New Year celebration. In light of the huge numbers of visitors, we certainly realize the need to reevaluate our ticketing processes during expected peak times of the year.

en I think this shows the economy is not going to be going as fast as it was last year. The Asian crisis may be having a dampening effect.
